🔌 Plug-Into-This

President Joe Biden plans to issue an executive order to support the energy needs of AI data centers by leasing federal land and facilitating the development of clean power infrastructure. The order is intended to accelerate AI infrastructure, boost economic competitiveness, and address national security needs.

  • Federal land will be leased to build large-scale AI data centers and clean energy facilities.

  • Companies using these sites must purchase domestically produced semiconductors, with specific procurement terms determined individually.

  • Over $30 billion is being invested to expand U.S. semiconductor production to support AI hardware.

  • Export controls on AI chips and technology will be tightened to prevent access by adversaries.

  • New measures will improve grid integration and expand transmission capabilities to supply power to AI data centers.

🤖 The move aims to align AI infrastructure growth with national security and energy development goals, reflecting broader strategic priorities that have — since the election — become more of a bi-partisan issue.

OpenAI has proposed a detailed plan to enhance AI infrastructure in the United States, focusing largely on positioning the nation to compete with China's advancements in AI and addressing critical energy and development challenges.

  • Proposes the establishment of AI economic zones to accelerate the development of data centers, clean energy facilities, and AI-related infrastructure.

  • Suggests a "National Transmission Highway Act" to improve energy, fiber connectivity, and natural gas pipelines for supporting AI operations.

  • Advocates for a North American AI alliance to pool resources and talent across the region.

  • Recommends leveraging the U.S. Navy's expertise with small modular reactors to meet the growing power demands of AI infrastructure.

  • Highlights workforce training programs to ensure sufficient skilled labor for AI infrastructure projects.

🤝 The initiative is seen as an effort by OpenAI to align better with the priorities of the incoming presidential administration, which is seemingly set to prioritize growth over regulation.

Lol.

We hear this once every couple of years —

2024:

2022:

Either they are blowing smoke up everyone’s you-know-what to try and keep people coming back to platforms increasingly flooded low-quality randomness, or they just keep having to adjust their algorithm each time bots and bot creators master the new algorithm 🤷‍♂️

Regardless, we’re a far cry from the sites where you could go snoop on the lives of your circle of friends and see never ending floods of pictures of babies from extended family. It’s hard to evaluate as a subjective user at this point since the experience seems to depend so heavily on your personal usage.

If TikTok is the measure of our collective attention span today, it’s no surprise that nobody bats an eye when they run the same “it’ll be like it once was” type of story in consecutive years 🤦‍♂️
